While holiday shopping is usually associated with Black Friday mobs and big box stores broadcasting their deals on every media channel imaginable, that’s not all there is. People looking for gifts can also visit local shopping events, where they can see what local businesses and creators have to offer and put the money built up with their holiday savings plan to good use.

However, finding local shopping events isn’t as easy as hearing about a sale at Best Buy. You need to know where to look for them.

Do an Internet Search

How to find events in RochesterWhen searching for local Rochester shopping events, Google should be your first stop. By typing in something like “Rochester MN holiday shopping events” or “events near Rochester MN this weekend,” you’re almost guaranteed to find a few websites that will list shopping events in Rochester. Just make sure the websites list holiday shopping events in Rochester, MN instead of Rochester, NY or Rochester, MI.

Check Rochester Websites for Events

While Google will give you several useful results, there are some websites out there you’ll want to check consistently, such as:

  • Rochester Local
  • Experiencerochestermn.com
  • Downtownrochestermn.com
  • Exploreminnesota.com

You’ll also want to check the websites of Rochester institutions, like the Rochester Public Library, the Graham Arena Complex and the Mayo Civic Center.

Another good source for holiday information is business websites, not just of small businesses, but also shopping centers. For instance, the Galleria at University Square has a free newsletter for anyone who wants to subscribe, and the website itself has a Sales and Event tab to keep you informed. Even the Apache Mall has a website, and upcoming events are listed on the front page.

Search Facebook for Rochester Shopping Events

Search Facebook EventsFacebook isn’t just for memes. If you click the Events in the menu (left-hand side on a computer, bottom row on a mobile device), you’ll be able to see what events are going on in your area. You can sort by local events, events taking place this week or even the events your friends are hosting.

You’ll find plenty of events in Rochester, as well as local shopping events in surrounding towns, like Byron, Zumbrota and Oronoco. Or if you have a favorite local artisan or small business, check their Facebook page for any events they may be at or holiday specials and deals they may be offering.

Find out About Shopping Events by Word of Mouth

Of course, while the Internet can be extremely helpful in finding local shopping events, it’s not the only way to find out what’s going on. You can always ask your friends and co-workers if they’re aware of any holiday events taking place in Rochester over the weekend.

The biggest advantage of finding events through word of mouth is that you’ll get recommendations from people you trust. If you know someone has the same interests as you, you’ll feel a lot more confident that you’re going to have a good time. You might also find out about events that aren’t on any official calendars.
